Week 2 John Muir Family Award

Wildflowers

So this weeks theme is wildflowers and minibeasts.

We were having a look at the challenges and have managed them okay I think.

Challenge 1 Wildflower Hunt
This was hilarious when they found the cuckoo flowers next to all the dandelions that we see lots of. The kids were racing all round the grasses shouting cuckoo flower at the top of their wee lungs and it made me laugh so much onlookers must've thought we were mad walking through Glasgows East end. ๐Ÿ˜‚ My heart was in my mouth a lot of the time because of a few things

-Isla insisted on wearing an Elsa costume with pyjama bottoms and no socks and sandals to the woods. I had ran out of patience and just let her come out on the walk.

-Both kids kept enthusiastically finding flowers near roads and ran away from me shouting about flowers ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ˜ฏ๐Ÿ˜ฎmanaged to corral the pair of them as best I could.

We found an amazing amount of flowers. Wild garlic really surprised me! It smelled amazing.

We stuck a small sample to a big sheet of paper and came home to learn about the structure of a flower and draw/label them.

Now, I was really unsure how a preschooler and a primary 1 would manage the flower naming task but the kids blew me away. I've been struggling to get my kid to write his schoolwork all week (we're trying to learn the first 100 words) and he couldn't wait to write the parts of the flower.

Challenge 2 Bug Hunting
We found lots of insects today under rotted wood- we found a huge slug inside a tree trunk and a massive family of woodlice.

Musical outdoor fun to make a musical band and learn the outdoor songs was fun
 They loved the hedgehog one

Making a Bug hotel- the kids did this at the back of our garden together using old bits of turf and wood.
